Surgeon General of U.S. Space Force discusses future of medicine in space with Baylor students


TONIGHT COLONEL WALTER “SPARKY” MATHEWS– SURGEOUN GENERAL OF THE NEWLY FORMED UNITED STATES SPACE FORCE — GAVE STUDENTS A FIRST HAND LESSON ABOUT THE SPACE FORCED LAUNCHED IN DECEMBER LAST YEAR. FOX 44’S KENDALL GREEN WAS THERE FOR THE LECTURE HOSTED ON BAYLOR’S CAMPUS. HE JOINS US LIVE. KENDALL ALOT OF FOLKS INTERESTED AND EXCITED ABOUT SPACE THERE TONIGHT— THAT’S RIGHT ADAM THE LECTURE HALL SEATS WERE ALL PACKED OUT MORE THAN A HUNDRED BAYLOR STUDENTS EAGER TO LEADN MORE FROM COLONEL MATHEWS, HE SAYS HIS GOAL TODAY WAS TO GET STUDENTS AT HIS ALMA MATER EXCITED AND INVOLVED WITH THE FUTURE OF THE U.S. SPACE FORCE. :00 :06 :06 :17 :17 :37 :37 :47 :47 :50 :50 1:02 1:02 1:06 1:06 1:16 1:16 1:20 1:20 1:35 COLONEL WALTER SPARKY MATHEWS MET WITH THE MEDIA BEFORE HIS LECTURE THIS EVENING SHARING THE GOAL HE HAD IN MIND FOR THE NIGHT. COLONEL WALTER “SPARKY” MATTEWS/U.S. SPACE FORCE SURGEOUN GENERAL: “I want them to catch the excitement of where we’re going and what we’re doing not just 20 years in the future but 5 years in the future or next year or next month.” AND THAT GOAL WAS CERTAINLY MET– THE LECTURE HALL FILLED WITH AIR FORCE ROTC CADETS AS WELL AS STUDENTS WITH A SPARKED INTEREST IN THE FUTURE OF THE U.S. SPACE FORCE. HE TAUGHT STUDENTS ABOUT THE WHY THE NEWLY FORMED BRANCH OF THE MILITARY WAS FORMED. HE DESCRIBED THE SPACE FORCE’S ROLE AS A “COAST GUARD FOR THE PLANET” MEANING THE FORCE WOULD PROTECT THE COUNTRY FROM ANYTHING IN SPACE THREATENING THE COUNTRY’S SAFETY. COLONEL WALTER “SPARKY” MATTEWS/U.S. SPACE FORCE SURGEOUN GENERAL: “We would like to sing KumByYah in space with everyone else around the world but the problem is is our competitors, our adversaries aren’t doing that.” ALSO STRESSING THE SPACE FORCE’S IMPORTANCE. COLONEL WALTER “SPARKY” MATTEWS/U.S. SPACE FORCE SURGEOUN GENERAL: “America is commited to ensuring untethered access to and freedom to operate in space. That’s what space force is all about.” STUDENTS AT BAYLOR SAY THEY WALKED AWAY FROM THE LECTURE PRETTY EXCITED. JUNIOR MAJOR IN IN ASTROPHYSICS ANDREW MALES/ASTROPHYSICS MAJOR: This was actually pretty interesting. Im actually really excited about this. as a kid you know you always grow up seeing this crazy syfi stuff and to see it actually come into fruition this soon is really really cool.” AND ONE STUDENT IS HOPING HE CAN GET INVOLVED WITH THE SPACE FORCE IN ANYWAY HE CAN. DAVID MENDEZ/BAYLOR PRE MED STUDENT: “I’m interested in seeing how its going to progress from here. Honestly Im a prior vet, interested in how this will go, maybe I might decide to join up as a medical officer.” NOW COLONEL MATTEWS ALSO BROKE SOME PRETTY SIGNIFICANT NEWS CONCERNING A POSSIBLE ROLE HE COULD PLAY AT BAYLOR.
