James Q. Miller Multiple Sclerosis Clinic: Compassionate Care for Patients with MS

My name is Meena Kannan, I’m a neurologist
at the University of Virginia. I specialize in multiple sclerosis and related
diseases. This may be individuals who have had a number
of neurologic symptoms and are coming for a diagnosis or probably just further evaluation. We also provide long term care for people
with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Patients should expect a very patient-centered
approach, meaning that diagnosis and further plans in evaluation and management would focus
not only on managing their disease itself but optimizing their function and their quality
of life and just assure the quality of health care one would get here. We see patients from maybe four or five hours
outside of Charlottesville and it’s really a privilege to know that people will travel
so far for the quality of care that they’ll get here. There are other MS centers of excellence on
the east coast but a lot of patients come specifically to UVA to get their care here
because I think we take care of the whole patient from top to toe as well as all the
emotional aspects that can come as living with somebody with MS. We work with people in ophthalmology, physical
medicine rehab, hematology, physical therapists, occupational therapists, so patients would
expect that they would get comprehensive care when they follow with us in our MS clinic. It’s also very enriching for us as providers
to understand how to better manage our patients with these very unique needs. Many of our patients have ambulation issues. They’re very nervous about what this would
look like getting into the building. So we actually worked with management to offer
valet parking for patients that have handicapped parking or if they’re military. We have a wonderful staff of transportation
people that are right out front with wheelchairs or whatever access is needed for a patient
to make it as easy as possible to get to their appointment see us.
