Denver Debates Minimum Wage Idea As Craig Hospital Increases Pay

SENTENCED TO 14 DAYS, ANOTHER ACTRESS, LORI LOCKLIN, AND 18 OTHER PARENTS, HAVE PLEADED NOT GUILTY. THE CITY OF DENVER WANTS TO RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE, BUT 1st IT’S ASKING PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT IT. TONIGHT WAS THE 2nd OF SIX TOWN HALLS, WHERE PEOPLE COULD WEIGH IN ON THE PLAN, MAYOR HANCOCK HAS PROPOSED TO INCREASE THE MINIMUM WAGE TO $13, $.80 PER HOUR NEXT YEAR. IT WITHIN GO UP TO NEARLY $16 PER HOUR IN 2021. SOME BUSINESSES AND ORGANIZATIONS HAVE ALREADY DECIDED TO PAY THEIR WORKERS MORE, CBS4 KELLY WORKMAN, JUST ANNOUNCED THE PAY THERE IS GOING UP. Reporter: IT CAME AS QUITE A SURPRISE TO SOME EMPLOYEES HERE, BUT IT IS A MOVIE HR STAFF SAY ISN’T JUST IMPORTANT FOR THOSE WHO WORK HERE, IT’S ALSO IMPORTANT FOR PATIENTS. KEVIN JACKSON HAS AN IMPORTANT ROLE AT CRAIG HOSPITAL. I WASH DISHES, AND I HELP OTHER STUFF DOWN IN THE KITCHEN. Reporter: HE IS PROUDLY WORKED HERE FOR MORE THAN 19 YEARS. THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO WORK. Reporter: NOW, THINGS TO BE GOING FROM GOOD TO GREAT. THE LONGTIME UTILITY WORKER RECENTLY LEARNED HE IS GETTING A BOOST IN PAY. OF I’M A LITTLE SURPRISED. Reporter: STARTING NEXT WEEK HE WILL EARN MORE THAN $15 PER HOUR, AND KEVIN ISN’T THE ONLY ONE. WE WANT TO TAKE CARE OF THEM SO THEY TAKE CARE OF OUR PATIENTS. Reporter: STACY IN THE HOSPITALS HR DEPARTMENT SAYS THEY DECIDED TO INCREASE THE HOSPITALS MINIMUM WAGE TO $15.34 , IMPACTING 180 EMPLOYEES ACROSS 40 DIFFERENT POSITIONS. UNDERSTAND THAT THE COST OF LIVING HERE IN DENVER IS JUST SKYROCKETING. WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STAFF WERE TAKEN CARE OF, AND WE ARE EARNING AT LEAST A LIVABLE WAGE. IT FEELS GOOD, BECAUSE THEY ARE LOOKING OUT FOR US. Reporter: KEVIN SAYS THE PAY INCREASE WILL HELP HIM PAY HIS INCREASING RENT, IT’S A CONCERN HE KNOWS MANY PEOPLE IN DENVER HAVE. SO, HE IS HOPEFUL OF THE MINIMUM WAGE WILL RISE FOR EVERYONE ACROSS THE CITY. I WAS BORN AND RAISED HERE, I REMEMBER WHEN STUFF WAS CHEAP AND REASONABLE, NOW, IT’S GONE UP. I MEAN, I AM IN FAVOR BECAUSE OF THAT. Reporter: NOT EVERYONE IS ON BOARD WITH THE MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE, THAT INCLUDES COLORADO’S RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION. WE HAVE POSTED THE STATEMENT FROM THE ASSOCIATION’S CEO ABOUT WHY THEY ARE AGAINST IT, AT CBSDENVER.COM, THAT’S ALSO
