#becauseofadonor – Bri | Boston Children’s Hospital

I didn’t really realize it was a major issue
until I woke up in the ICU after having had open-heart surgery. I was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. I was a completely healthy teenage girl, nothing wrong, you know, and then all of a sudden it’s like, oh you need a heart transplant. I was in the car on my way to clinic, my dad got the call. and he’s like, “Um, so I guess they have a heart for you.” And later that night I went into surgery and the heart started beating the next day. Nurses have had such a huge impact on my life. They’re not only there for your treatment, they see like the worst and the best. They talk to you, and they build puzzles with you,
watch movies with you. A lot of the nurses in the
hospital they were encouraging me, they’re like, “Oh Bri, You should
be a nurse you can work here with us.” So that inspired me to go to nursing school. I want to be able to help kids like me, after all that they’ve been through. I think it would help them
see there is another side to this. My name is Bri and because of a donor, I’m able to study to become a nurse.
